How PaperC works
Hello PaperC User!
On PaperC you can find and read specialist books in complete text at no cost, including academic, reference and technical texts. PaperC also offers premium function tools that help you work with your books. You can print and save pages, mark passages, copy text with or without automated citations, annotate sections, and manage your texts in an individual online library for a per-page-fee of € 0.10.

First time using PaperC? Get started by registering on the web site with your email address. Shortly after registering you will receive an email with your account activation link.
If you do not receive an activation email, please check your spam folder – it may have landed there. If you still can’t find the email, please write to support@paperc.de, and we’ll search the corners of our server to find it. ;)
Click on the link in the email to activate your account – ta-da, you’re registered!
To access the books on PaperC, simply log in with your email address and chosen password.
Find books∧ Top

The white search box at the top of of each page (1) is our basic search. Enter one or more key words, then click ‘Search’ or press the ‘Enter’ button.
If you know exactly what you are looking for, try our advanced search. You can access it by clicking the ‘Advanced search’ button in the header (2). Clicking the button opens a new search window, enabling you to search by title, author, publisher and publication date.
Enter known information in any or all of the search boxes. One click on ‘Search’, or pressing the ‘Enter’ button, will reveal your search results.
Want an overview of the book you just found? Click the ‘Info’ button (3) or the cover of the book to open the information page. To read the book click ‘Read’ (4) and the book will open to the first page.
To view pages that include your search term, search via the simple search and click on ‘Page results’ – your search term will be highlighted on each relevant page. Click on the page number, and the PaperC reader directly opens the relevant book page.

All chosen books can be read in the PaperC reader.
The arrow buttons ‘<’ and ‘>’ (1) allow you to turn pages back and forth. You can also do that by clicking on the right or left edge of the page in the reader.
To jump ahead to a specific page number, type the number in the field between the arrow buttons, press the ‘Enter’ button, and the reader will open your chosen page.
A contents page for most PaperC books can be accessed by clicking the ‘Contents’ button (2).
You can change the font size by clicking the Plus or Minus buttons (3).
To search for terms within your chosen book, use the search box located immediately above the page within the reader (4).
Search within books ∧ Top

To find a term within a book, use the search box located immediately above the book page (1). You can specify your search within the current page, or the entire text, by selecting your preference from the dropdown menu.
To view the passages in which your search term appears, press ‘Enter’ or click on the ‘>>’ button (2).
If the list is longer than the window you can scroll up and down to view all text. Click on the grey column on the right side of the list with the left button of your mouse, then hold and move the text (3).
Click on any of the search results in the list to view the selected page.
Charge your account ∧ Top
On PaperC you can access premium functions: these include saving and printing pages as PDFs, marking and saving specific text passages, annotating books and copying text, with or without automated citation, into your personal text editor. To enable these premium functions you need to credit your PaperC account.
Go to ‘My Account’ and click on ‘Charge Credit’.
Choose the number of pages and the amount you wish to spend from the payment options available (1).
Indicate your address and method of payment (2). You can pay with Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Moneybookers and Zong mobile payments.
Save passages∧ Top

You can select specific passages of texts and save them as excerpts in your personal PaperC library.
Highlight the passage using your mouse (1). A prompt will appear, offering you to either ‘Copy text’ or ‘Create excerpt’.
To save a passage to your personal library, select it and hover over the ‘Create excerpt’ button (2). A prompt will appear: ‘Buy this page to use premium functions’. Click on ‘Create excerpt’ to purchase the page and save the chosen text.
If you don’t have enough credit, you will be directed to the ‘Charge Credit’ page to recharge your account.
Purchasable pages cost €0.10 per page (with the exception of reduced pages when using voucher codes). Once purchased, all premium functions such as saving, printing, highlighting and annotating are enabled for a page.
Some books and pages – such as the title or contents page – are free of charge. If text is free the prompt will inform you by prompting ‘This page is free of charge’.

When you save an excerpt, it is highlighted. If you would like to change the color, hover with the mouse arrow over the highlighted passage – a prompt will appear allowing you to nominate another highlight color. Click on the color you wish to use to mark the text (1). You can also tag the excerpt here.
All your saved and highlighted excerpts appear on the right side of the book under control panel (2).
You can copy text from a book on PaperC and insert it into text editors like Word or OpenOffice. You can choose between two options:
Copy text without citation:
After highlighting a passage, hover the mouse arrow on ‘copy text’. If you haven’t purchased the page, a prompt will appear “Buy this page to use premium functions”. Click on ‘copy text’ to purchase the page. The highlighted text is then copied, and you can paste it into your text editor.
Copy text with automated citation:
If you have saved a passage via the ‘Create excerpt’ function, you can insert the saved text with an automated citation into your text editor. Go to the ‘My Annotations’ section within the control panel on the right and select ‘Excerpts’. Click ‘Copy’. Upon pasting the copied text into a document within your text editor, the author name and year of publication automatically appear in brackets, i.e., (Doe 2010).
Annotate books ∧ Top

You can annotate passages in books on PaperC.
Hover over ‘Create note’ (1). A prompt will inform you: “Buy this page to use premium functions”. Click on the button to purchase the page. Pages cost €0.10 each (with the exception of reduced pages when using voucher codes).
The annotation controls open as a pop-up – here you can insert annotations, ideas and commentary to the text. You can choose a colour for your note and tag it (2).

In the text, your annotation appears as a small square sticker (1).
You can move the annotation sticker to a different part of the page by holding and moving it with the mouse arrow. You can open the annotation dialogue to change and update your annotation by clicking on the sticker.
Save/print pages as PDF∧ Top
To create a ready-to-print PDF of individual pages or the whole book, click on ‘Download PDF’ (1).
Choose the pages you wish to download as a PDF. You can save an individual page, a number of consecutive pages or the whole book (2).
If you’ve made notes on the text or created excerpts on these pages, you can decide whether or not to include them in the PDF.

If you have not previously purchased the pages that you wish to save and print, hovering over “Export PDF” will create a prompt: “Buy pages to use premium functions”. If you click on “Export PDF”, missing pages are bought and the PDF exported. Every page you purchase is deducted from your account credit.

An overview of your PDF downloads in ‘My account’ will open in a new browser tab or window while your document is being processed. When your PDF is ready for download, the ‘Download PDF’ link appears on the right. Click on the link. If you use a pop-up blocker, please deactivate in order to receive your download.

Voilà! The download dialogue for your PDF opens. Now you can save and print your PDF.
