Preface vii Preface The idea for preparing this volume came after I attended the International Association for Suicide Prevention meeting in Stockholm in 2005. There I learned that over one million people commit suicide every year, and more than half of these occur in Asia (WHO 2003). However, very little reliable information is available for a good understanding of the multifaceted and complex issues involved in suicide prevention in Asia. Research on suicide in Asia is rare; it is undeveloped and under-funded. My guess is that 90% of worldwide suicide research resources are spent on 10% of the suicide population (mainly in the USA, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand). Over 60% of suicide deaths worldwide occurred in Asia. In this volume, we make an effort to provide insights into an understanding of suicide, based on firsthand experience in our respective countries/regions.
