Am 11. Februar 2011 trat der ägyptische Präsident Hosni Mubarak von seinem Amt zurück. Damit gab er den Forderungen der Massendemonstrationen nach, die am 25. Januar 2011 in Kairo begonnen und anschließend sukzessive das ganze Land erfasst hatten. Interimistisch übernahm ein „Oberster Militärrat“ die Macht.
